The visting artists that you have such as Robben Ford, Steve Erquiaga, Bruce Forman, Tom Warrington, and Danny Carron, are so motivating that I go home and practise like mad.

100 Guitar Tips You Should Have Been Told - A Review
<< Back to FREE Articles

This book written by David Mead and published by Sanctuary Press is one great book that would be an asset to any guitarist who is a beginner/intermediate. It is written in good plain English and is easy to understand. David is the editor of Guitar Techniques magazine and is an experienced writer and teacher. This shows through in all the chapters.

One thing that many beginners and intermediates experience is who to turn to for quality advice. And when you get this advice, can you trust it? Well David has interviewed hundreds of the world’s best guitarists in his time as a writer for guitar magazines and he has collated these tips and included them into the various chapters in his book. This advice is worth the price of the book alone I think.

The chapters in the book include how to learn, reading music and tab, why play the guitar, learning rhythm, learning lead styles, scales, improvising, how to build solos, working out solos from recordings, playing live, turning pro, passing auditions, and there are many more. The tips that are in each chapter will definitely save you a lot of time and frustration.

The book comes with a FREE CD so you can hear examples of what David writes about in the book. You will also be able to put some of the ideas into practise that you will be learning by playing along with the CD.

Some of the advice put forward in the book comes from players like Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler, Robben Ford, Steve Vai, David Gilmour, John Lee Hooker, Joe Satriani, Jennifer Batten, Brian May, Nuno Bettencourt, Tal Farlow, Joe Pass, and many others. You can’t go wrong with the advice from these legends.

I think this book has the wrong title because it is not full of 100 practical tips that you can use immediately, but I believe they would number more in the thousands. Every line has a tip in it. It certainly is an inexpensive investment for guitarists.

I have discovered that this book is quite hard to find outside of the UK, but Amazon has it available from their website. To take a look at “100 Guitar Tips” and see what other guitarists have to say about it click here

It is also paired with my book “The Secrets of Successful Practising for Guitarists”. The two books go well together and you can see them by clicking here.

Happy practising,
