Im at the beginning, so Zach this gives me inspiration to do the best i can, i know its difficult but like Kevin says ” improvement is the key” and that set me at ease and calmed my nerves. Thanks. Shaun
Zach, it is great having you in the band. I know everyone loves having you there, and yes, they are a great bunch of people.
Discipline – this is something missing in a lot of people today. They don’t know what the word means. We really do appreciate your efforts in getting up to Palmy for the rehearsals. And yes, learning your parts at home (and ironing anything out with your teacher) is a big part of what all the players need to do. 🙂
Mistakes – there is NO place for perfection in this band or anywhere else in music. It is “Improvement” we are after, not perfection. Jason is correct in that perfection is the killer of fun. 🙂
Fun – if it is not fun it is not worth doing. 🙂
You are welcome Zach, and glad you are one of us. 🙂

I’ve been a member of the Lab Band for nearly half a year now and soon to be a former newcomer. I would just like to share some of my experiences with you when I first began and what I’ve learned in the process.
Discipline- As most of you know, the band gets together on rehearsal days in Palmerston North where the majority of the band members live. Consider yourself lucky if you live nearby, but me being a Wellingtonian, I knew I had to put in the effort to get up early in the morning and prepare myself for a long road trip. Everyone in the band is counting on each other to do their part and without everyone, we can still make the music, but it doesn’t sound complete unless you have a full house. Different members have different parts of the music to play, and so, for it to sound good, you should also take the time to practice the music as much as you can.
Mistakes- Don’t fear them. This is the tool for us to become better musicians. During my first Lab Band rehearsal onward, I’ve made plenty of mistakes. I remember some of the unclean notes I played in the song “Evil Ways” as we were playing it on a fast tempo. THAT WAS FUN! :). But what did we do? Like all professionals, we moved on and be better. I don’t think anyone can be perfect in music or anything else outside of music, let alone trying to avoid mistakes. As what my guitar teacher said to me “Perfection is the killer of fun”, and when you learn to embrace the mistakes you’ve made and learn from them, your playing will get better. TRUST ME. Which leads me into my next point…
Have Fun- The Lab Band has a positive atmosphere and we always have a laugh before, during and after rehearsals. The fun can also be found when you’re performing in front of an audience on the night of the concerts. Take it as an opportunity for you to build character, contacts and promoting the band.
And with that, these are just some of many things I’ve learned in my experience with the Lab Band. For any future newcomers, I encourage you to learn as much as you can when you’re rehearsing and performing. It is a journey I will never regret. Thank You Kevin for letting us explore an awesome experience. 🙂
